There is nothing better than spending the evening listening to some live music. Florence has plenty of spots to do this. I’ve listed a few different venues below incase you need to satisfy a musical craving; some are more intimate, others you can have a good dance in. A lot of places tend to play jazz, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but there are so many different styles that you’ll easily find something to suit everyone.
- La Ménagère – Via de’ Ginori, 8, 50123 Firenze.
This has a mix of music on offer. Upstairs they sometimes have a pianist playing the Grand Piano, whilst downstairs they have a more varied programme of music (see the cover photo), mostly Jazz. This is definitely the place to come if you’re looking for a very chilled evening.
2. Volume – Piazza Santo Spirito, 5/red, 50125 Firenze.
I live right around the corner from Volume and I can’t remember a night when it’s not been packed. This is one of the options for a buzzier atmosphere and they have a really varied listing of music. I think they have something live on most nights, so this is definitely a safe option.
3. Jazz Club – Via Nuova de’ Caccini, 3, 50100 Firenze.
I’ve only been here a couple of times but it is by far my favourite on this list. Before coming to Florence I would never have said I was a particular fan of jazz; I liked it but rarely listened to it. However, coming here has opened my eyes (and ears). Every night they have something different on, and the atmosphere can range from very chilled sitting at tables, to the every person on their feet and dancing. If you’re after some good music and don’t want to be disappointed give this place a go, although you’ll have to wait up as it doesn’t open till 23:30.
4. Rex Caffè – Via Fiesolana, 25, 50122 Firenze.
This place is relaxed earlier in the evening then slowly gets more wild. Often there is music earlier on, but it’s best to double-check as this isn’t guaranteed.
5. Libreria La Cite – Borgo S. Frediano, 20/r, 50124 Firenze.
Ok, so I’ve not actually been here whilst there has been live music, but they always have posters showing what’s coming up. I love the atmosphere in this place, it is very relaxed and a bit more studenty than the likes of La Ménagère.
6. The Speakeasy – Via di S. Niccolò, 23, 50125 Firenze.
This is a really small but lovely bar, a bit further off the tourist track. It has a few tables and they set up one corner with live music; I don’t know how often this is so it may be worth checking beforehand. Last time I was there, the musician was an acoustic guitarist, so this may be the place to go if you’re not a fan of jazz.
7. The streets of Florence.
The city is always full of music, you just have to wander long enough. Head to one of the main piazzas and you’ll probably find a violinist, or someone with a guitar playing for a crowd.
